An Interview with Judge D’Army Bailey

U. of Memphis Law Review

by DARRELL PHILLIPS, MARSHALL DIGMON, RUSSELL HAYES
In 1999, Shelby County’s Circuit Court hosted a landmark tobacco trial, pitting three plaintiffs against the industry’s giants. The trial lasted four months and was closely watched by both the legal and financial worlds. Although the jury ultimately denied relief to the plaintiffs, it sent a strong mes-sage to Big Tobacco. D’Army Bailey, who retired in 2009 after nineteen years on the bench, discussed the case with Law Review member Darrell Phillips. Fortunately, Judge Bailey took the time to reminisce about another notable topic, Justice Clarence Thomas’s visit to Memphis in 1998.

by Darrell Phillips / photos by Karen Campbell

Eric Setterlund is no mere law student.

Outlook from 1 North Front

The law school’s move from Central to Front is proof that not all major transitions need be bumpy. The grand opening gala in mid-January gave students and stakeholders an opportunity to show off the newly repurposed digs and the chest-puffing has been justifiably without pause ever since.

Opportunities all rise at new law school site: U of M’s Move to stately U.S. Customs House means boost for students, legal community, Downtown merchants too.
by Darrell Phillips, Special to The Commercial Appeal
Jokes about frustrating lecture-hall acoustics, low-slung blackboards and missing erasers are par for the course in many classrooms at the current location of Memphis’ only law school these days. Increasingly, they precede the quip: “I cannot wait for the move.”
