In 1999, Shelby County’s Circuit Court hosted a landmark tobacco trial, pitting three plaintiffs against the industry’s giants. The trial lasted four months and was closely watched by both the legal and financial worlds. Although the jury ultimately denied relief to the plaintiffs, it sent a strong mes-sage to Big Tobacco. D’Army Bailey, who retired in 2009 after nineteen years on the bench, discussed the case with Law Review member Darrell Phillips. Fortunately, Judge Bailey took the time to reminisce about another notable topic, Justice Clarence Thomas’s visit to Memphis in 1998.

How One Law Student May Influence the Consolidation Debate

Eric Setterlund is no mere law student.

Indeed, he has the typical swagger of a third-year, nonplussed by long reading assignments or the threat of an unexpected flogging in the classroom. Like most of his closest friends, he spends much of his time at the downtown law school. Like them, he is looking forward to graduation, to passing the bar, and to taking over the real world.

Setterlund however, has done something his peers have not.

The law school’s move from Central to Front is proof that not all major transitions need be bumpy. The grand opening gala in mid-January gave students and stakeholders an opportunity to show off the newly repurposed digs and the chest-puffing has been justifiably without pause ever since.

Jokes about frustrating lecture-hall acoustics, low-slung blackboards and missing erasers are par for the course in many classrooms at the current location of Memphis’ only law school these days. Increasingly, they precede the quip: “I cannot wait for the move.”
